Hyundai announces New Horizons Studio

The Hyundai Elevate walking vehicle concept seemed pretty out-there when the brand introduced it at CES in 2019. The vehicle appeared to be closer kin to the All Terrain Armored Transport from Star Wars than to a conventional automobile. But the concept becomes slightly less outlandish with the announcement that Hyundai has established a new unit to develop what it calls Ultimate Mobility Vehicles, and that the Elevate will be the first among them.

Hyundai’s New Horizons Studio “furthers Hyundai Motor Group’s vision to shape the future of mobility,” the company said in an announcement. “Using a combination of robotics and wheeled locomotion technology, Elevate and other vehicles by New Horizons Studio are expected to redefine vehicular mobility.”

The battery-powered Elevate concept features moveable legs with wheels on the bottom, theoretically making it able to traverse extreme terrain. Hyundai posits

2020 Buick Electra electric concept car unveiled in China

Buick plans to broaden its range of electric cars in the coming years, and it still owns the rights to the heritage-laced Electra nameplate, so it was only a matter of time before the past and the future met head-on. Buick resurrected the name it used between the 1959 and 1990 model years on a futuristic, battery-powered concept car.

Created by a Shanghai-based design studio, the Electra concept takes the form of either a tall sedan or a low crossover, depending on your perspective. While it’s not officially a preview of an upcoming production model, it ushers in a design language named Potential Energy that will permeate most of the electric cars the firm will release during the 2020s. It’s inspired by a space capsule, according to Buick, so its greenhouse was drawn to resemble a glass pod.

Formula E founder Agag’s latest gig is electric powerboat racing

LONDON — Formula E and Extreme E founder Alejandro Agag launched the world’s first electric powerboat racing championship on Friday, presenting E1 as a perfect fit for his other electric series.

The series aims for a 2022 debut and features single-pilot RaceBird boats with hydrofoil technology and able to race at speeds of up to 60 knots — equivalent to 111 kph or 69 mph — on seas and lakes.

The platform is being developed with SailGP, a high-tech sailing series run by five-time America’s Cup winner Russell Coutts, who will be a technology and technical partner.

Agag told Reuters ahead of a presentation at the Monaco Yacht Club that the time was right for a series promoting electric boats.

“If there is not a market, we will create a market for this because it is something that is necessary,”

2021 Audi E-Tron Sportback First Drive | Range, technology, cargo space

Audi’s post-Dieselgate electrification push gains a second prong for 2021 in the form of the E-Tron Sportback. If you couldn’t tell from the name alone, the Audi E-Tron Sportback expands the company’s new electric crossover into the sporty, slope-backed crossover space.

As is typically the case with these crossover off-shoots, the Sportback shares its underpinnings with the old-fashioned (can we even call it that yet?) Audi E-Tron, which now benefits from the same tweaked powertrain that was announced with the Sportback’s unveiling, comprising a 95-kWh battery pack and dual (front/rear) electric motors producing a total of 355 horsepower and 414 pound-feet of torque. Those figures increase to 402 hp and 490 lb-ft in the E-Tron’s “Boost Mode,” which can propel the midsize crossover to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds. That’s plenty quick for a conventional car in this

Stefano Domenicali is the new CEO of Formula One

Formula One need not fear any Ferrari favoritism when the Italian team’s former boss Stefano Domenicali replaces Chase Carey as chief executive in January, Red Bull principal Christian Horner said on Friday.

He was speaking before Formula One’s owners Liberty Media formally announced the Italian will take over from Carey in January next year.

The Italian will also be F1 president with Carey, who led the revamping of the sport following the 2017 ouster of former supremo Bernie Ecclestone, moving to the position of non-executive chairman.

Speaking to reporters at the Russian Grand Prix before the announcement, Horner said Domenicali’s appointment would be great for the sport.

“Having competed against him when he was team principal of Ferrari he had a lot of integrity, he was a racer, a competitor, he understands the business,” said Horner, now the sport’s longest-serving

Honda SUV E:Concept introduced at 2020 Beijing Auto Show

Honda traveled to the 2020 edition of the Beijing Auto Show to introduce a design study named SUV E:Concept. Electric and connected, it’s a preview of an upcoming production model that’s being developed for China.

Details about the concept are spectacularly scarce, but the photos released by the company show a sporty two-door model that blurs the line between a shooting brake and a crossover. Its front end is slanted at an angle we normally associate with 1980s BMWs, and it’s dominated by thin, swept-back LED headlights and unusually large air dams. Black trim over the wheel arches and the rocker panels adds a rugged touch to the overall look.

The roof line flows into an upright rear end whose design almost mirrors the front end’s. If you’re playing electric concept car bingo, you can put a chip
